"Survival specialist" Ben Zekri returns to RSL with Al Kholood

Roshn Saudi League Al Kholood have appointed the popular Noureddine Ben Zekri as their new manager.

The Algerian, who last season memorably guided Al Okhdood to RSL safety, was late on Sunday announced as Paulo Duarte’s successor following the club’s disappointing start to the 2024-25 campaign.

At present, Al Kholood sit third from bottom in the table having won only one of their six league matches, with four of those defeats. To add to the team’s woes, they exited the King’s Cup last month at the first stage, losing 3-1 at home to Al Shabab. Duarte's final game at the club was the 1-0 RSL defeat to Al Khaleej on October 4.

In a statement, Al Kholood said: “Al Kholood management has officially terminated its relationship with the first football team coach, Mr. Paolo Duarte, and his assistant staff, in appreciation of his special circumstances.

"The club’s management has officially completed the contracting procedures with coach Noureddine Zekri and his assistant staff. He will be presented to the media tomorrow, Monday, at 4:30 pm at the club’s headquarters.”

Even though it remains early in the season, in turning to Ben Zekri, Al Kholood have opted for a manager known primarily as a RSL "survival specialist". Last season, he masterminded Al Okhdood’s escape from relegation despite being installed only in April. Then, the club lay third from bottom also, one point into the drop zone with seven matches remaining.

However, the 59-year-old Ben Zekri won two and drew three of those fixtures, ensuring Al Okhdood’s top-flight status with a superb 2-0 victory on the final day at Al Tai – a result that prompted his now-famous celebration.

In previous roles, Ben Zekri has helped Al Raed, Al Fayha and Damac retain their place in the RSL as well. Al Kholood mark the fifth Saudi Arabian top tier side he has managed. Ben Zekri's first test at Al Kholood comes on Sunday, with the trip to bottom side Al Fateh in RSL Matchweek 7.
